This Christmas, my friends and family gave me some amazing gifts, for which I’m unbelievably thankful. Today, I’m sharing some of them with you—to express my gratitude and to inspire you to pick up some gifts of your own the next time you’ve got a holiday or birthday coming up!

I’ve followed Button Poetry for a while now, and I’ve wanted to read these two books in particular pretty much since they were released. My mom heard me mention them enough (and I tagged her in Facebook posts about them often enough) that she ordered them! I adore what I’ve read of Olivia Gatwood and Sabrina Benaim‘s work already, so I’m beyond excited to finally read these!
Storytime: On Black Friday, I was seriously considering picking up a Google Home Mini. However, I’d just purchased a Fitbit Alta HR* (yay for keeping track of my health!) and couldn’t justify another fairly major purchase.
Again, though, Mom saved the day! In fact, she brought Alexa to the family! So far, I’m loving her. Whether it’s a low-spoon day and I need a minimal-effort way to be productive (or some easy entertainment) or I want to be more efficient while writing posts, having a handy virtual assistant has already been life-changing!
I’m obviously known to my family as the book nerd. My grandparents picked up these gorgeous hardcovers, which happen to match my interests perfectly!
After a few weeks of the fall semester, my long-beloved Keurig, “Emmett,” stopped working. When my French press exploded at the end of that same semester, I got sick of instant coffee pretty quickly. Again, Mom took my complaints to heart and decided to fix this. This one hasn’t gotten a name just yet, but I’m looking forward to plenty of more-than-satisfactory coffee going forward.
T-shirts and Accessories
As I prepare to sort through my closet this new year, I’ve got some lovely new tees and accessories to replace the items I donate!
My family has decided that we’re actually the Belchers. As the older sister, awkward writer, and animal lover of the family, I’m Tina; my sister is the violent younger daughter, Louise, and my parents are Bob and Linda.
Unrelated to Bob’s Burgers, my grandparents got me this gorgeous necklace! I’m nearly as in love with the quote on the box as I am with the necklace itself.
A few weeks ago, I got a text message from my friend, B. Do you like dolphins? Who doesn’t like dolphins? When I received an amazing package of Christmas gifts from her a bit later, it contained a beautiful dolphin necklace—she’d seen it and thought of me! She also sent along a t-shirt emblazoned with a Harry Potter reference, as most good t-shirts are. Coincidentally, this also happens to be one of the best-fitting shirts I own! She also sent this too-cool cat, who’s eagerly awaiting a place on my bookshelf when I get back to my apartment!
Portable DVD Player
This past semester, I spent an absurd amount of time working on a research project surrounding the 1963 film Ophélia*. After a weeks-long struggle to actually find a copy of the movie, I was faced with another difficulty: watching it! My laptop doesn’t have a disk drive and the only external one I had on hand was formatted for Mac. Short of a mile-long commute to campus watch a film a few dozen times, I was stuck.
Eventually, I managed to install the necessary drivers to make the Mac drive work with my Windows computer. But, I lost weeks of time that I could have worked on the paper.
I’d wanted a portable DVD player since I was little and my dad played his on road trips. Now, I finally have one of my own AND won’t have to struggle to watch movies at school anymore! It’s especially helpful this semester, as a friend and I have dozens of movie nights planned. Plus, I can always pick up one of my favourite movies for self-care days!
Bonus gift: To go along with the DVD player, Mom found one of my favourite childhood films: The Land Before Time VII: The Stone of Cold Fire*!
A few days before Christmas, I still needed something extra for my dad (check out our Ultimate Gift Guide for Every Dad if you need some ideas of your own on that front!). While we were shopping, I suddenly wanted nothing more than to play with a Lego set. I couldn’t find any (though we did find Dad this Star Trek Mega Bloks set*!) and left quite bummed.
As it would turn out, my sister noticed and went searching herself. On Christmas morning, she surprised me with my very own Lego dinosaur*! It technically makes three different dinosaurs, but I just can’t bring myself to take Reptar apart.
Do you remember Tamagotchi*? They’re one of my fondest memories. So when I found out that Bandai was releasing a 20th-anniversary version of the Mini virtual pet, I couldn’t help but want one! Tom here is smaller than the Tamagotchi of my childhood (my much-older eyes don’t approve), but he’s got all the fun!
It wouldn’t be Christmas without some yummy treats! My good friend B sent me a whole pile of various teas, while Mom supplied some candies, cocoa, and, of course, some coffee for the new machine! To top it all of, I got several new mugs to drink it all from!
What did you get for Christmas? Are you planning to get any of these gifts for yourself or someone else?
